CertainTeed Independence

Product History

This is another one of the main discontinued shingles that still remain on a lot of homes. This product was sold as a "30 year" architectural shingle, yet is not in fact what it claims to be.

This product gives a similar appearance of the architectural shingle with having the faux laminated strip on the tabs. This product is notorious for failing prematurely, with large granular loss and delamination of the sealant strips.

It is common to find these roofs failing or compromised within 10-15 years of installation.

Discontinued

The Independence shingles have been discontinued and out of production since 2017. In the event of storm/roof damage, those with these shingles on their roof are not able to purchase "Like, Kind, and Quality" materials to match their roof.

Issues such as tab size, weight, and durability prevent these shingles from having a comparable product in the market for purchase.

Homeowners Insurance: Is it Covered?

The good news for homeowners with these shingles is that they are covered under homeowners insurance to be replaced if any amount of damage has occurred. Due to repairability issues, matching with similar products, and "Do Not Mix" specs from manufacturers will force the hand of the insurance carrier to replace the entire roof. Having just a couple of these shingles damaged on the roof is enough justification for a replacement.
